Did you know that each of the mini houses contains a whole ton of ice?

How does it work?

IceBox Challenge on Operastranden

An engaging and visual experiment that shines a spotlight on the importance of sustainable and energy-efficient buildings. By placing two mini-houses on Operastranden in Oslo – one built according to building standards and the other with super-insulated Passive House standards, each filled with a tonne of ice – we demonstrate how innovative building techniques can minimize energy consumption and resist the summer heat. We want you to reflect on how buildings affect the environment, and inspire a more sustainable future.

This 19th IceBox Challenge in Oslo will be the first one in the Nordic countries and will bring sustainability to a higher level owing to A2M and Produktif.

The mini houses are now being built by Ly Hytta in Nedre Eggedal in Buskerud. Between 8 and 13 May, they will be assembled at Operastranden and on 19 May the competition will start. Closing event is 19 June with Princess Astrid of Belgium.

You will see the mini houses directly behind Operastranden between the beach and the Munch Museum. The area is open around the clock.

The challenge is now over.
